Trash Collection

Trash Day

Trash and recycling are picked up on a weekly basis every Friday morning. Please make sure to place your trash and recyclables in the proper City-authorized receptacle Thursday evening or before 6:30 AM on Friday. You must remove the containers from the street by 7 pm Friday evening.

The City of Austin Solid Waste Services requests that:

  • Your garbage must be at the curb by 6:30 a.m. each Friday. If possible, your cart should be at street level.
  • Keep your garbage cart five feet away from all obstacles such as your recycling bin, your yard trimmings, parked cars, mailboxes, telephone connection boxes, water meters, fences, and walls.
  • The handle of your cart should point towards your house.
  • Bagging all garbage before putting it in your cart. This will help prevent it from blowing away and littering the streets.
  • Your garbage must fit easily in your cart. The lid of your cart must be closed to prevent litter.

Garbage Carts: Solid Waste Services provides garbage carts to its customers.

Residential Garbage Rates
Your monthly rate pays for the collection of a set volume of garbage, unlimited recycling and unlimited yard trimmings set out according to Solid Waste Services guidelines. Your rate depends upon the size of garbage cart you choose.

Prices and fees do not include tax. Commercial rates are also available online.

Extra Garbage
Your monthly rate does not cover the collection of garbage that does not fit easily in your cart when the lid is closed. Place a $2 Extra Garbage Sticker on all extra bags of garbage. You will be charged $4 on your next utility bill for the collection of each extra bag that does not have a sticker on it.

Service Request: To exchange your cart or report a damaged or missing cart, simply call 512-494-9400 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Friday or send an email. Be sure to include your address.

Three sizes of garbage carts are available:

How to Recycle

  • Place your recycling at the curb by 6:30 a.m.
  • Keep your recycling about 5 feet away from your garbage, if they are collected on the same day.
  • Rinse containers and put the lids in your garbage.
  • Separate paper recycling from mixed containers. Put the paper in a brown, paper grocery bag or a separate recycling bin.
  • Flatten corrugated cardboard, cut or fold it to 2 feet by 2 feet, and tie it into manageable bundles with string, tape or twine. Put pizza boxes in your garbage cart.
  • On windy days, flattening aluminum cans and plastic bottles will help keep them from blowing out of the bin. Try placing a brick or another heavy object on top of your paper recycling, or if you put paper in a recycling bin, stack the second bin with your cans and jars on top of the paper recycling bin.

Only recycle the following items. For more detailed information, click on the listed items.

Concerns About Noise or Vandalism

The North University Neighborhood is a thriving, densely populated community with a mix of people from diverse walks of life. For over 120 years families, parents and their children, couples, single professionals, graduate students, and undergraduate students have enjoyed a friendly, cooperative coexistence often separated only by a fence or a driveway. Collectively, we understand that every person contributes to the fabric of our unique Central Austin community. We value each other as neighbors and are genuinely proud to call this area our home.

Recently, unreasonable after-hours noise has become an issue in our area, disrupting the lives of many people. NUNA has been developing guidelines with other neighborhood groups and the Austin Police Department to implement a solution to the noise problem. APD officers have committed to help you by enforcing a strong noise ordinance, but they need your help. The residents must be serious and proactive about the situation.

City of Austin Code §9-2-3 (1)(3) states that a person may not make noise audible to an adjacent residence between 10:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Violations are punishable as a Class C misdemeanor.

If you experience unreasonable after-hours noise in your area, NUNA and APD strongly encourage you to do ALL of the following:

  • Call 911, not 311, and tell the operator that this is a “call for noise.”
  • Report the disruptive noise activity; provide the address and note any other factors, e.g. suspected underage drinking, drug use, or parking violations.
  • Request that the attending officer obtain the names and dates of birth of all the subjects for the report. (This information may be used to file other criminal charges, pursue civil litigation with the tenant or landlord, and if the defendants are students, to contact parents or seek disciplinary action with the university.)
  • Tell the operator to note on the call that you are with NUNA.
  • Finally, obtain the 7-digit call number from the operator for future reference.

At a convenient time, e-mail any information about the incident to noise@nuna-austin.org.
An officer with NUNA will follow up and contact the owner and landlord of the property if applicable.

Working together, we can preserve this unique residential area and ensure the quality of life for all residents.
